Here are the books I am planning to order for Mabel for her upcoming birthday, when she will be two (if we can believe it!). Above, Chloe by Peter McCarty--sequel to one of our all time favorite picture books, Henry in Love.
An Awesome Book by the rad Dallas Clayton--long a slightly-hard-to-get self-published gem, but now at long last published for the trade by Harper Collins, thank you very much.
I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen. When we first read this one (in the charming kid's bookstore Curious George, in Boston) we liked it, but hesitated at the implied off-stage vengeance of the bear eating the animal who stole his hat. Recently, however, we've realized Mabel loves stories about animals eating other animals (lately she's been trying to convince me that the bird in one of her picture books is about to make a nice lunch out of that nestful of eggs). So what the heck.
