A Fantastic Installation at YBCA by Leah Rosenberg and Susan O'Malley

The other day I went to the Bay Area Now 7 exhibition at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Lots and lots of super cool art from myriad artists was on view. But the thing that captured my heart the most was a collaborative project by Leah Rosenberg and Susan O'Malley. Called "Finding Your Center" the piece is aimed at helping viewers to do just that. The installation is comprised of various colorful circular and cylindrical forms scattered throughout the exhibition galleries; an audio track to be listened to on headphones at each spot; lovely heavy circular cards with colored edges that you could take away with you; and various other little hidden surprises. This is happy art--full of optimism, simplicity, and restfulness, devoid of irony--and as you walk through and spend time with it you gradually realize how radical it is in its happiness. I feel like I owe personal thanks to these two artists; and through the power of social media in the case of Leah, and in Susan's case because she is--full disclosure--one of my forthcoming authors, I get to offer them exactly that. Photographs don't really do the experiential nature of this artwork justice, but you can't blame a girl for trying. Enjoy a glimpse here, and if you're local get your butt down to YBCA before October 5th and experience it for yourself.
