The Second Poem in the New Poem Series About the Summer of 2006
June 2, 2006
Last night
I was sitting
sideways
on the couch
slouched down
against the arm
with my feet up
facing the window
This was after dinner and it had gotten pretty late
but it stays light out so late now that there was still
a darkening remnant of glowing electric blue sky
framed in the boxes of the window frame
I’d been thinking all evening
about how everyone is happier
on Friday night than on
say Tuesday night
all because of what is happening the next day
but that the evenings themselves are the same
it’s only what’s coming up a good fifteen hours away
that’s any different
So why do we worry about it?
Why let it be like that?
Why not let each evening
start when it starts
end when it ends
and unspool itself enjoyably
regardless of where you do or do not
have to be at eight the next morning?
Why let the future mar the present?
Easier said than done I realize of course
but there was something about that dark blue sky
which confirmed my feeling that it was doable
and might be worth the effort to do
