Frieze NY 2018: Assemblages and Objects

Many of the gallery booths at Frieze only have art on the walls, so it’s exciting when 3D things like sculptures, installations, and such come out into the middle of the floor. I noticed a trend towards the grouped or organized or classified cabinet-of-curiosities style of assemblage. And many other marvels. See for yourself!

Publishing Party Hopping

Went party hopping last night to not one, but two, publishing events with my pal and coworker Mirabelle. First we hit The Battery (fancy! see above and just below!) for the launch party of the third issue of their in-house magazine Candy, for which I did some illustrations (much more about that in due course). Then we scooted out to Green Apple Books on the Park for a reading by our beloved author Roman Muradov to launch his book On Doing Nothing (which I acquired and Mirabelle edited for Chronicle Books). Roman signed our, and our pal Sarah's, books with little drawings of each of our own selves inside. And a good time was had by all.

Color Poem #51

there is a pink
so hot so deep
so I just soaked up the energy of the sun
and pushed it forth as molecules of color
because I am a motherfucking sweet pea
and not a thing in this world can stop me
in my purity and grandeur
so happy so loud so vast
that you
rejoice

Little U

I'm in the inaugural issue of the new magazine from the fine folks at Uppercase known as Little U telling the story of how Crayola Neon Washable Kid's Paint inspired my entire drawing practice and basically changed my life, accompanied by my very own drawing of said box of paints. It's quite an honor and a thrill. It's hard to tell from these photos, but magazine is adorably tiny -- maybe a quarter the size of a standard print publication. I adore it and adore being a part of it.

"Clue"

It took some digging but I managed to find pictures online of the Clue game I had as a child. It's almost exactly as I remember it, except I'd forgotten the odd and gratuitous use of quotation marks. Also, can I just say, it is very hard to draw a circle in proper perspective on the sloped lid of a rectangular box. So I didn't.

Frieze NY 2018: Quiet and Dreamy

I didn’t notice this until I went to organize my photos, but almost as a counterpoint to the bright pallet, there was another much more subdued set of colors that also seemed to recur frequently at Freize. Sometimes -- though not always -- with quiet, dreamy subject matter to match. And I surprise myself by liking this stuff just as much the neon day-glow stuff.

Shondaland!

Guess what? The illustrations I did for the inimitable Roxane Gay's essay about memoirs in YOU Magazine were picked up and re-featured on Shondaland, So you can now rad the whole rad piece (full of excellent book recommendations) online, right here. This is almost more star power than my little heart can stand. I feel immensely proud and grateful.

May Festivities

A few highlights from May -- a month of theatrical events and celebrations.

Mabel was in the school talent show singing How Far I'll Go. Singing it, at her own instance, a-ca-freaking-ppella (seriously, this child has nerves of steel).

Bill and Mabel made me a breakfast in bed of Arizmendi cornmeal and dried cherry scones for Mother's Day and it was a thing of beauty.

Bill and I stayed at Inn at the Presidio for our 13th wedding anniversary weekend. Our room was those four windows along the front, behind the flags. Just, wow.

We saw The Color Purple and it was tremendous. The production and the acting were great, but it was singing that was a gosh darn revelation.

Popsicle

There is a reason I painted this popsicle over and over again until it arrived at the version you see here. But what that reason is will remain shrouded in mystery just a little while longer.

Frieze NY 2018: Colorful

One of my favorite things at Frieze were a family of hotly colorful artworks. There was a particular pallet of  bright purples and neon pinks and sometimes limes and yellows, often contrasted against dark accents, that I saw a lot of. Particularly in abstract works but also some figurative. It’s a bit as if Midcentury Abstract Expressionism and 1980s Memphis/Esprit style had a baby and then invited 60s psychedelia over to babysit. And yet somehow it looks entirely of the now. Not retro or dated at all. Check it out. (previous Frieze post is here. and oh, don't worry, there are more to come)
